New tool

Background remover now keeps hair and fur edges sharp

The new edge model separates fine strands from busy backgrounds, so product shots and pet photos come out clean on the first pass.

Cutting a subject out of a photo is easy when the edges are clean. It gets hard with hair, fur, feathers and fabric, where thin strands blend into whatever is behind them. The background remover now uses a new edge model that treats those areas separately, so fine detail survives instead of being clipped into a blocky outline.

What is new

The tool now works in two passes. The first pass finds the subject and draws a rough mask around it, much like before. The second pass looks only at the border of that mask, at a higher resolution, and decides pixel by pixel how much of each strand belongs to the subject and how much belongs to the background. Pixels on the edge can be partly transparent, which is what makes hair look natural when you place the cut-out on a new background.

You will notice the difference most in three kinds of photos:

  • Portraits with loose or curly hair against a busy street, a bookshelf or foliage.
  • Pet photos, where fur often has a soft halo of light around it.
  • Product shots with fabric tassels, brushes, plants or anything with fine fibres.

Better colour at the edges

A common problem with cut-outs is a thin coloured fringe. If someone stood in front of a green hedge, the edges of their hair pick up a green tint, which shows up badly on a white background. The new model estimates the true colour of each edge pixel and removes the spill from the old background. Cut-outs now look right on light, dark and coloured backgrounds without manual clean-up.

Tips for the best result

  1. Use the largest photo you have. More pixels give the edge model more detail to work with. You can resize afterwards with the Image resizer.
  2. Keep the subject in focus. Motion blur and heavy compression make edges harder to read.
  3. Check the preview on a dark and a light background. Use the background switch above the preview to spot any leftover fringe before you download.
  4. Download as PNG. PNG keeps the transparency. JPG does not support it and fills the background with white.

Still free, still simple

There is nothing to install and no account to create. Add a photo, wait a moment for the preview, and download the transparent PNG. If a result is not quite right, tell us through the contact form and include the kind of photo you used. Real examples help us keep improving the model.

We will keep tuning the edge model over the coming weeks, with a focus on very fine hair against bright skies and on glass and other see-through objects.
